Danger Will Robinson!!

Okay, this might be a little cheesy and, unless you were born in the early 60's, you won't remember this show. But this kept running through my mind as I was thinking about today's post.
I participate in a lot of webinars to learn new ways to build a following and, ultimately, sell more books.  Many of them I come out with one or two key points that resonate with me. A couple have piqued my interest enough to put them on my wish list, but only one made me run the other way.
A few nights ago I received an email promoting a webinar about selling books on Amazon. I thought, "Hey, that's what I do. Wonder what they have to say?" and signed up.  The webinar started 15 minutes late, the hosts said they were going through the preliminary "get to know them" bit fast so listeners could hear the good stuff quicker, but if you had a question, write it down in the chat box and they would get back to you. They flew through the slide presentation not giving their audience time to jot notes down. My pen flew at lightning speed attempting to write as many notes as possible , when the webinar went down-- twice. I asked others in the chat room if they were having that problem. No one answered.
The host kept pushing the benefits of the program and how much money you would make, and to clench the deal the audience was told that if you buy in the next 15 minutes, you would receive a discounted price. I'll admit I was tempted, but I refuse to make a decision to part with hard earned money without doing my research even with a bell sounding each time someone bought the product urging me to do the same. After the sales pitch, I looked the host up on Google. There were several posts, but they all were about the same interview. Huh? Anyone else I've researched had a website listed along with other accomplishments. I looked on Amazon, nothing. I even went to Wikipedia--not a single thing. Finally, there were three short YouTube videos posted a year ago. Not looking good.
Any other webinar I've been part of has offered a playback even if it was only for a day or two to help you decide if this was right for you. Not this one. The original email couldn't be found. Now, I'm a fantasy writer and visions of another 60's TV program, Mission Impossible, came to mind: 'this message will self destruct in ten seconds'. What the heck?! Every presenter I've been affiliated with sends out multiple emails to remind you of their product or create a relationship, and I haven't heard another word from them.
Who ever wrote this script knew what they were doing. They knew their target audience , what their audience wanted, and how to build a sense of urgency.  I don't know that this was a scam, but I'm glad I was cautious and checked things out. As the old saying goes, "If it is too good to be true, it probably isn't true."

Keep it between the lines,
Michelle
